david_143Hi all, I'm new to Crux and having some issues setting up my network.  Would anyone mind giving me a few pointers?13:16
frinnstyou could start by telling us what the problem is13:16
david_143I can most def be descriptive:  I am trying to set up a wired DHCP connection, on a fresh crux install.  I configured /etc/net as in the handbook for dhcpcd, however, the connection always times out.  lspci | grep Ethernet tells me I have a mcp61 Etherent controller, and lsmod tells me I have the forcedeth driver loaded, which I believe is correct.13:20
david_143ifconfig does show eth0 as an existing connection13:20
david_143I also swapped in a known good ethernet cable13:21
jaegeranything in the dmesg output that looks odd?13:21
jaegeryou might also check the output of mii-tool if that card supports it13:21
Rotwangdavid_143: did you check if there is a link between your NIC and remote device?13:22
RotwangI just repeated what jaeger said [;13:22
david_143dmesg does say a couple of things which I'm not certain what they mean:13:23
Rotwangdavid_143: if there is a link, you can try to set up your network by hand and see if that works13:23
david_143if there is a link?13:23
david_143I tried making a static ip and pinging but I got nothing13:24
Rotwangdavid_143: mii-tool13:24
david_143ok, looking up mii-tool13:25
david_143operation not supported13:25
david_143no mii interfaces found13:25
*** lasso has quit IRC13:26
jaegerare there any "link up" messages in the dmesg output?13:26
jaegeror link down, for that matter13:26
david_143there is an ifname eth0, but that's it13:27
jaegercan you pastebin the dmesg output somewhere?13:28
Rotwangdavid_143: are you sure this network card works?13:28
david_143does that mean it's not doing anything?13:28
jaegernot sure, the output depends on the driver itself13:29
david_143of course13:29
david_143I've never had trouble with this card before13:29
david_143I'm not sure what the deal is13:29
jaegerfor reference, mii-tool would have said something like "eth0: negotiated 1000baseT-HD flow-control, link ok"13:30
jaegerbut I'm guessing the forcedeth driver doesn't support it or that specific card doesn't13:30
david_143I suppose I could boot on a live CD that works and see what output I get there13:31
jaegerworth a try13:31
david_143I guess13:31
pitillodavid_143: same kernel's version when it works and when it doesn't work?13:32
david_143forcedeth is the nforce ethernet driver, its an onboard nvidia chip13:32
Rotwangcould it be kernel misconfiguration?13:32
jaegerpossible but unlikely, if the eth0 device is available13:33
david_143I think crux 2.7 is 2.6.3613:33
david_143and my other one was older13:33
david_143I think it was 2.6.26 before, but it was a totally different version of linux13:34
david_143what could be misconfigured?13:35
pitillowgetpaste the config...13:35
david_143sorry, do what?13:36
teK_use et al13:37
Rotwangdavid_143: and paste the dmesg output13:37
david_143but obviously I'm on another computer so it will take a sec13:37

* Rotwang has no ideas13:49
pitillodavid_143: are you using it on 1000 mode?13:51
david_143I haven't changed anything...13:52
pitillofirst look at google shows that may be you'll find problems with 2.6.35, have tried to upgrade to .36?13:52
david_143where would I know that?13:52
david_143maybe I should13:54
david_143do you have a link for me to look at?13:54
pitillocheck the link in dmesg (grepping for your interface)13:54
pitillodavid_143: first topic shown by google looking for your problem13:55
david_143dmesg | grep -i mcp61 shows nothing13:58
pitillo-i eth013:59
david_143just the line that it found before in forcedeth14:01
david_143I think my interface only does 10 and 100 mbps14:02
Rotwangdavid_143: maybe try upgrading your kernel14:02
Rotwangas gentooers suggested14:02
pitillodavid_143: seems that there is no link up line in your dmesg14:02
david_143so it's not doing anything14:03
david_143so I probably do need to upgrade14:03
david_143or more likely downgrade14:03
david_143thanks a lot everyone14:04
david_143I'm not sure I would have got that on my own14:04
jaegerhope it helps :)14:04
david_143yeah... It probably will, it's kind of a weird problem, seems like a bug to me.14:06
