mdsmith2Hello :)18:45
mdsmith2Ok, I've had a problem for a while with Crux 2.7.1.. I've tried to install Crux using the default kernel and lilo, with boot on sda1, and root on sda2. On my desktop, I got the error about not syncing VFS on unkownblock(8,2) on boot, and I never figured things out. I am now getting the same error trying to install on VMware. But this time, I get an extra "Cannot open root device 802 or unkown-block(8,2)" Please append a correct root=. In lilo.conf, my b18:48
mdsmith2oot is set to sda1, and the root= is set to /dev/sda2, which is where the root is located. Any ideas?18:48
jaegerIt's likely that the support for your disk controller or filesystem is missing from the kernel, or built as a module18:57
mdsmith2That is what I have been thinking, but I've enabled most every hard drive driver in the kernel (as built in, not module). I also have the filesystem (ext4) support built into it. Any clue as to what kernel driver is needed? In VMware, the hard drive is listed as "VMware Virtual SCSI HD (0:0)19:00
jaegerDoes it list something similar for the disk controller itself?19:01
jaegerlsi parallel scsi, buslogic, etc.19:01
mdsmith2Hmm, not that I can see19:02
jaegerIf you can't find that info the easiest way would be to boot the install ISO again and run lspci -k | grep "in use"19:02
mdsmith2ok, one moment19:03
mdsmith2ata_piix, mptspi, a bunch of pcieports, uhci_hcd and ehci_hcd19:05
jaegerok, ata_piix and mptspi are the important ones here19:05
jaegerDevice Drivers -> Serial ATA and Parallel ATA drivers -> Intel ESB, ICH, PIIX3, PIIX4 PATA/SATA support19:06
jaegerDevice Drivers -> Fusion MPT device support -> Fusion MPT ScsiHost drivers for SPI19:06
jaegerI'm guessing ata_piix is being used for your virtual cdrom and mptspi for the drive(s)19:07
mdsmith2Aha! The Fusion MPT was built as a module19:09
jaegerI bet that's the problem19:09
mdsmith2let me just rebuild and try it again19:09
jaegerProbably the same issue with the desktop, though most likely a different driver19:14
mdsmith2Yeah... I'd try on the desktop, but it kinda... died19:14
jaegerdoh19:14
mdsmith2Hmm, no good. Same error19:14
jaegerdid you make sure to re-run lilo after recompiling?19:15
jaegerif so, can you paste your lilo.conf on pastebin.com or similar?19:15
mdsmith2Ah, no. Let me try that real quick19:15
mdsmith2sure19:15
mdsmith2Same result19:19
mdsmith2Here is lilo.conf: http://pastebin.com/09zLLBT419:20
jaegerDo you have another bootloader chaining to the first partition on the drive?19:21
jaegerboot=/dev/sda1 installs lilo to the first partition, not to the master boot record19:21
mdsmith2...19:22
mdsmith2that may have something to do with it19:22
jaegermost likely you want boot=/dev/sda and root=/dev/sda219:22
mdsmith2I thought boot told it what partition to boot19:22
jaegerunderstandable but not in this case19:22
jaegerIt does indicate where lilo should install its boot code but that's usually the master boot record, not really related to the linux /boot partition or dir19:24
mdsmith2Ah okay, that makes sense. Let's see if that fixes it19:24
mdsmith2okay, I changed it to /dev/sda, and ran lilo again, but same error19:25
jaegerhrmm, very strange19:25
mdsmith2I recall having this problem with LFS once before, but a guy helped me solve it by enabling the proper ata driver so that the kernel seen /dev/sda2 instead of hda219:26
jaegerThe install ISO uses libata by default, which will use sdXY... as far as the kernel you've built, that's easy enough to check19:27
jaegerin Device Drivers19:27
jaegerATA/ATAPI/MFM/RLL support (DEPRECATED) <-- this should be disabled19:27
jaegerSerial ATA and Parallel ATA drivers <-- this should be enabled19:28
mdsmith2Yeah, I've got those (dis)(en)abled appropriately19:28
jaegerI've got no other idea, sorry =/19:28
mdsmith2It's okay, I appreciate the help :) Just back to tinkering I suppose hehe19:29
jaegergood luck :)19:30
mdsmith2Thanks :)19:30
mdsmith2Ok, this is funny... I moved the kernel and such to a /boot directory on /dev/sda2, deleted /dev/sda1, and redid lilo to compensate. Same error.19:43
jaegerodd19:44
mdsmith2So it is reaching the partition, but the kernel doesn't know what to do with it19:45
Romstermdsmith2, boost=/dev/sda root=/dev/sda1 in lilo.conf20:00
Romsterunless you got boot in sda2 be sure you got the boot flag set on the partiton!20:01
Romsterand that lilo.conf and fstab is correct. driver built into kernel not as a module lspci -k20:02
Romsterand GMP/dos partion type support and FS support.20:02
Romsteralso don't forget to run lilo after every lilo.conf change.20:03
Romstergotta get back to work later.20:03

nogagplzgood, get gone20:03
