BitPuffinI'm glad I found it in "someone familiar"'s repo14:38
BitPuffinotherwise I'd be inclined to maintain my own14:38
frinnstirssi ftw14:45
BitPuffinyou could probably use irssi with znc14:46
BitPuffinalthough I prefer weechat over irssi personally14:46
frinnstbut why? if you can run a bnc you can probably run screen + irssi14:46
BitPuffinthat said, in weechat everything is a plugin so in theory you could run anything in it so I might as well just emacs for irc since it's better at what weechat could potentially do14:47
BitPuffinfrinnst: initially I was planning tmux + weechat14:47
jaegerI use tmux+irssi, simple and effective14:47
BitPuffinBut I think a bouncer will probably use less resources (yes, it matters for me on my vps :P), and I can connect to it from emacs14:48
BitPuffinwhich I could with tmux as well I guess, but still14:48

npicHi! I'm just wondering if somebody have a rough description or general hints on packaging (from the scratch) process workflow. I mean, it's impossible to just sit and write a Pkgbuild for a program which configure options you don't remember by heart... Any tips?18:18
frinnstwell, when i package a new port i usually just download the source, extract and run configure and see what happens18:27
frinnstthen create a new dir, cd into it and type prtcreate to get a nice Pkgfile template18:28
npicfrinnst: how do you deal with "junk files" mentioned in the manual? They often can't be detected until an actual installation18:30
renovaatiofrinnst: did you see my question regarding building farms?18:30
frinnstyes i saw it, but bitpuffin answered with                                                                 erdic18:31
frinnstasdf18:31
frinnst <BitPuffin> me and prologic is already planning to address that :)18:31
frinnstpersonally I dont have a need for binary packages so im not overly interested in it18:32
BitPuffinfrinnst: oh I didn't know about prtcreate18:32
frinnstgranted, arm packages are useful sometimes for my rpi ;)18:32
jaegernpic: I usually build without special configure options and without removing junk files, then review the footprint file after the build is done. If things need to be removed, then I tweak the Pkgfile and build again18:33
renovaatioBitPuffin: so you are planning on providing binary packages for crux?18:34
npicthanks everyone!18:34
BitPuffinrenovaatio: yeah, and also a webapp for maintaining port collections18:34
renovaatioBitPuffin: that's great18:34

renovaatiodid you guys see and effect from the move to systemd on the number of users of crux?18:35
renovaatiois there more people using crux since systemd is forced down the throat of all those distros?18:35
BitPuffinrenovaatio: I came back to crux because of systemd18:36
BitPuffinso at least one extra user :P18:36
jaegerThere's been some new usage due to that, yeah18:36
renovaatiois that good for crux in your opinion?18:39
renovaatioarchlinux was not bad before it got mainstream and dicks populated it's userbase18:39
jaegerI don't have a strong opinion on it, though I don't see it as a negative at all18:40
BitPuffinrenovaatio: I think it's good for crux that it's not staying with systemd if that's your question18:41
BitPuffinif it did switch to systemd I would probably go to slackware18:41
renovaatioi would leave to gentoo18:41
BitPuffinI would switch to gentoo if slackware switched to systemd18:42
BitPuffinor probably some other repo actually18:42

diverserenovaatio: systemd was my reason why I came to Crux too, since Arch was taking a dump on itself. But in a way I'm glad it forced me to move, because I would have never found or use this hidden gem distro.20:31
diverseI agree, the community is not friendly at all and doesn't live up to it20:32
pnutzh4x0rhi, how do the different releases work?  i see that 3.0 and 3.1 are still both getting updates20:33
diversepnutzh4x0r: 3.0 is not getting updates (as much due to cruxbot errors). Use 3.120:33
pnutzh4x0rok, i was browsing through the gitweb and i saw that both 3.0 and 3.1 were still getting commits20:37
pnutzh4x0rlike 3.0 recently got an openssl update20:37
diverseYeah, don't worry about 3.0 and use the latest release20:37
pnutzh4x0rwell, im not worried about that, im more interested in knowing what the release/support cycle is like, so for when 3.2 comes out20:38
diverseI'm not sure if there is an official release cycle. I think it's more like if the devs feels like updating because the core system utils are getting out of date and/or need cleaning up, but don't take my word for me it.20:40
pnutzh4x0rok, that makes sense20:41
diversefor example, moving to from the old udev to eudev, removing old and unmaintained net utilities, etc.20:42
*** renovaatio has quit IRC20:43
*** heroux has joined #crux20:44
pnutzh4x0rive been using arch for a long time... but im not comfortable with the rate of change that is normal for arch, so im trying to understand how often ports are updated in crux20:44
pnutzh4x0rbasically, i want something that is rolling, but not rolling fast (ie. more stable)20:45
diverseports are updated as often as the maintainer of the port is willing to, but usually they are pretty good about it. The only things that don't get updating as much is system and core utilities, which of course prevents the breakages you experience in arch, so often.20:46
pnutzh4x0rgreat, that confirms my understanding20:47
diverseyou can view Crux as "semi-rolling" but it's not a real rolling distro20:48
pnutzh4x0rsounds good to me, i ll give it a try20:50
pnutzh4x0rthanks!20:50

u7knv9his there an equivalent of lha package in the repos?21:26
thetornainbowhey guys. i've been working on porting termite - a VTE terminal that i love to use to crux. i've gotten it to build and run, but it requires a patched vte3. the patch is located on termite's github page. i sort of followed what others have done with packaging it for Arch, that is, re-packaging vte3 so that it patches during pkgmk, then just using that package as the vte3 on my system21:26
thetornainbowis there an easier way to do it? i.e., naming the patched vte3 something different so as not to confuse it with the "vanilla" vte3? (i believe it's from romster's repo)21:27
thetornainbownvm, vte3 is in /opt21:28
*** Rotwang has quit IRC21:28
thetornainbowperhaps name it vte3-patched, or vte3-termite?21:28
jaegeru7knv9h: check http://crux.nu/portdb/21:31
jaegerIf it isn't there, feel free to make one21:31
jaegerthetornainbow: ask the vte3 maintainer to add the patch, if it doesn't cause any unexpected issues, perhaps. Otherwise I'd just maintain my own21:32
thetornainbowjaeger: okay, i'll do that. i wasn't sure what the right way to go about it :)21:32
u7knv9hit isnt in the portdb, i'll have to compile it manually, and maybe i'll create the port21:33
thetornainbowi threw crux on a partition and have been dual booting, but the last week or so i've been using solely crux. i really love how the distro is built - very simple tools and sane defaults. i especially like how easy it is to port software. i wish i had money to donate to making sure it keeps going :)21:35
thetornainbowbut maybe just a thank you to all you devs/other hard workers/thankless codemonkeys21:36
