tired890hah prologic, a real router you say? you mean those micro computers? a PC is as real as it gets04:55
prologicby real I meant really the OS :)04:56
prologichaha04:56
prologicI would almost never (these days) use plain 'ol <pick your favourite LInux OS/Distro> as a router :)04:56
tired890why not? I mean yes for a home user a 5-watt tiny box is surely a wiser choice.. but for other applications (say offices, cybercafes..etc), a router-oriented distro is a very viable option04:57

jaegerpfsense is still my favorite router/firewall thing05:00
tired890I use openwrt on x86 hardware05:00
tired890pfsense's implementation of loadbalancing is nice05:00
tired890but I wanted to avoid the bsds (nothing against them just wanted a unified set of boxes)05:01
tired890jaeger, what sort of hardware are you running pfsense on ?05:02
*** darfo has joined #crux05:02
jaegerA VM, actually. :) But the server is a Xeon E3-1230 with 16GB RAM and a couple intel gig nics05:03
tired890exotic!05:03
jaegerMy home NAS is also a VM on that same server... crux+ZFS+samba05:06
tired890so that server is in your house?05:07
jaegeryes05:07
tired890what is the host OS (the os running the VMs) ?05:10
jaegervmware esxi05:11
tired890enterprise setup you got there05:12
tired890those dual intel NICs, 4 ports each?05:12
jaegermostly for fun :) though we use vmware vsphere (esxi) at work, too, so why not05:12

prologictired890: http://www.routerboard.com/09:31
prologicI use these :) At home and commercially :)09:31
prologicand yeah things like pfsense, *wrt are good choices too09:32
prologicat *least* they are more geared towards the "task at hand"09:32
prologicrouting :)09:32
prologicjaeger, I think we're odering our 3RU NAS tonight :)09:32

tired890prologic, I do networking for a living too, and I had some problems that I decided not to invest in any particular vendor. So boxen must be from parts available everywhere09:59
tired890last one was an x86 with an old amd x2, kernel compiled with all needed drivers for the motherboard in question, 2 gigs of ram.. two NICs and it matches an "enterprise class" box from routerboard or whoever else sells these things10:01
tired890its liberating.. no more telling clients "out of stock" or stuff like that.. you walk in into any computer shop, get all parts needed and voila.10:02
