DavilaI really want to install crux but i've only used linux mint for a few hours. Could anyone help me through installing and dual booting windows 10 and crux?01:04
frinnstif a few hours of mint is your only experience i would probably advise against installing crux01:16
frinnsttry it in a VM first01:16
DavilaAlright01:17

xveethis is the silliest problem i've ever had. docbooks isn't letting a bunch of things install. i've commented them out of the Pkgfile but when i go to pr-get or do a pkgmk, it still wont budge01:48
xveei used your updated iso to install crux then installed mate. i suspect it might be the iso01:50

brian|lfsdid you create a database file02:52
weabotI had to cancel a pkgadd command because it was hanging, like 15 minutes on glibc for some reason02:53
weabotand now the database is locked and I can't find where to unlock it02:53
brian|lfsUse tools/pkgutils package.02:53
brian|lfspretty much. yeah. create <path>/var/lib/pkg and touch <path>/var/lib/pkg/db first. that's the db for pkgadd to use02:53
brian|lfs for p in *; do pkgadd -r /mnt $p; done02:53
brian|lfswell you would need to do what I pasted to install CRUX with chroot not sure about the lock issue02:53
weabotwhere's the source for pkgutils02:55
brian|lfsI would have to look on the iso02:56
brian|lfsits  in the tools fodler the pkgutils02:56
brian|lfssourcode not sure02:56
SitriYou'll get the sorcecode to it when you do `ports -u`02:58
weabotyeah I found it in crux.nu/files02:59
brian|lfsthats true02:59

weabotit didn't work03:09

weabotyes03:10
weabotand I just saw from the source that it locks files with flock03:10
jaegerWhat filesystem are you using? and any odd mount options?03:10
weabotzfs03:10
weabotno odd options though03:10
weabotthe big thing is that I canceled a pkgadd command03:11
weabotI just need to know how to unlock whatever it locks03:11
jaegernot sure what it does under the hood, might need to look at code03:12
weabotyou mean zfs or pkgadd?03:13
weabotpkgadd tries to flock /var/lib/pkg and if it's already locked it returns the error I'm hacing03:13

brian|lfsanyone know why weabot had to install CRUX via chroot05:16
SitriLack of working CD drives?05:22
brian|lfsI know in my case my network card wasn't in the kernel on the CRUX iso05:23
brian|lfsbut that was only when I first started using CRUX after newer kenrels came out on the iso it was resovled05:23
SitriBTW, is there a decent kernel configuration that covers most desktops?05:23
SitriI like CRUX, but doing repeated reboots to get basic stuff working's really annoying.05:24
brian|lfsI would say mine would cover most intel desktops05:24
brian|lfswhat support are you missing at this point05:24
SitriNothing05:24
brian|lfslol05:24
SitriI just have three systems I'll be installing CRUX onto soon05:24
brian|lfsahh ok are they all intel based05:25
SitriNope, mix of Intel and AMD05:25
brian|lfsok then you wouldn't want my kernel config lol05:25
brian|lfsit worked out pretty good for me after I got my new laptop used my kernel config from this system and only hadd to add wifi card and few other things05:26
brian|lfskernel actually worked first shot I was law dam I"m good05:26
jaegerSitri: the kernel config that the installer provides is supposed to be a decent starting point05:31
SitriThat's what I did use05:31
SitriEnded up having to do quite a bit to get sound working on one of my laptops05:31
brian|lfswell yes sound card suck on laptops05:32
brian|lfsYou read my mind jaeger I was going to suggest using the kernel config from the ISO05:33

vsteveso here's a weird one...I have a crux 3.3 system that I installed makemkv and handbreak on, both of which have a lot of dependencies, but when I've built/installed both and gotten them working, once I reboot my usb 3 ports no longer show up in lspci22:45
*** chinarulezzz has joined #crux22:45
vsteveI thought things that show up in lspci were pretty much just brokered through the kernel, so I don't see why installing other software would break usb 3 support, or maybe specifically renasas ports22:49

vsteveI don't think any of the packages I installed would have messed with kernel modules, but more over, what could stop the kernel from seeing a particular device?23:13
*** chinarulezzz has quit IRC23:13
vsteveas far as I understood it, in order for the kernel to 'see' a device it only needed to have the right module compiled-in23:14
ryu0vsteve: hardware failure.23:14

vsteveryu0, here's the interesting part, I have two boot drives, one that was prior to the software install, and that one it works fine23:14
vsteveif I boot from the one that has makemkv/handbrake installed, the usb 3 controller stops showing up23:15

vstevecan things ever...preemptively stop the kernel from loading a device driver?  I know people blacklist nouevau all the time23:23

vsteveall I can think to do is a clean install, and reboot after I install each portion and see what breaks it23:29
*** chinarulezzz has quit IRC23:29
vsteveI don't have anything blacklisted in grub....so I'm grasping for any possible thing23:30
jaegervsteve: that is undoubtedly some kind of kernel issue23:32
*** chinarulezzz has joined #crux23:32
vstevejaeger, go on23:33
*** chinarulezzz has quit IRC23:33
jaegerwell, either a kernel issue or your hardware is actually problematic23:33
vsteveit's the stock 3.3 kernel I think, 4.9.623:33

xckovsteve, anything interesting in var/log/messages or dmesg?23:39
*** chinarulezzz has joined #crux23:39
vsteveshoot, i should have checked, I'm already updating the kernel23:39

vstevehuh...so it seems like whatever I installed just ruined my ability to compile kernels23:44
vsteveit just hangs on HOSTLD scripts/mod/modpost23:45
xckosave .config, then run make mrproper, move .config back and make all23:45
xckomrproper will remove .config23:46

vstevedid that, now it hangs on UPD     include/generated/bounds.h23:46
xckoout of memory?23:47
vsteve125M of 32G in use23:48
xckocan you compile other stuff?23:48
abenzI had the same prob23:48
abenzunable to compile kernel23:48
abenza reboot fixed that23:49

vstevebut why?23:49
abenzonly saw it happen on 4.9.x23:49
frinnstiirc that was the sed issue23:49

vsteveok, I'll mess with it some more...glad it's not just me being haunted by video encoding software23:51
vstevethanks for the help23:51
*** vsteve has quit IRC23:51
abenzvideo encoding software? I was referring to the kernel itself23:51
*** chinarulezzz has joined #crux23:52
jaegeryeah, but he was thinking for some reason that makemkv or handbrake caused the problem23:52
abenzI see23:52
