pedjafrinnst, yeah, it snows. at places that never saw snow before. but that's a minor detail, I guess :)15:57
pedjaI don't want to turn this into #crux-politics, but the optimist part of me thinks that politicians are against the idea of global warming due to bags of money they received16:01
pedjawell, majority of them. some of them are just...16:01
pedjasorry about that. now, on to the usual technical discussion16:02
pedjaspeaking of which, anyone else got a .md5 sum mismatch with llvm-32?16:03
pedjasomeone should just remove all .md5sum files from official repos, we have .signature now16:08
john_cephalopodaYear 2104, politician drowning in molten Tungsten: "THERE IS NO GLOBAL WARMkdlfjsadk-blub-"16:08
pedja:)16:09
john_cephalopodaWell, it's understandable. Only a minority (97%) of scientists believe in global warming.16:10
Anselmoscience is screwey anyway16:10
Anselmocant trust that, especially when you can see it still snows16:11
Anselmothough the worse people are the ones who say climate change is happening, but is going to cause a lot of good without disreuption16:12

john_cephalopodaThere is still ice on Mars! Global warming is fake!16:12
Anselmopedja: is there any reason that md5 is still even being used on the official ones?16:12
john_cephalopodaAnselmo: Yeah, all the good hurricanes and floodings and forest fires and damage in agriculture. There's no downside!16:13
john_cephalopoda16:13
john_cephalopodaAnselmo: I guess it is so you can use 3.2 with new packages and still have at least some base security.16:13
pedjaAnselmo, most of the developers started removing them a while ago16:14
Anselmob-but warm, increase of suftae suitable for agriculture, removal of the northern ice caps freeing up more areas to mine oil and opening new trade routes between eurasia and america16:14
*** smolboye has joined #crux16:15
Anselmodidnt realize there were people using 3.2 with new packages . . .16:15
Anselmobut makes sense I suppose16:15
john_cephalopodaAnselmo: Yay, now we can finally do agriculture in all the nature reserves of Boreal forests with their unusable, nutritient-less soil while the fields in the south turn into deserts!16:16
AnselmoI dont like the south anyway--too warm formy tastes16:18
Anselmo:^}16:19
joacimwas talking to a geology professor once. he mentioned having a speech once about oil. made someone confused thinking oil was a renewable resource, like wood and water16:19
joacimas if it wouldnt take several thousand years to get a few more drops of oil16:20
john_cephalopodajoacim: My father is a geology professor. Geologists think in way longer timespans than usual people.16:21
pedjajoacim, how is Norway planning for the inevitable oil shortage?16:21
john_cephalopoda"It's very young mountains", just way older than humans :þ16:21
joacimsell oil, invest in something else16:22
Anselmoand with all the draining of swapms we've done recently . . . is the oil production rate not also being reduced ?16:22
Anselmoswapms and deforestation and all such things16:22
john_cephalopodaBreaking: Trump invades Florida to preserve swamps: "We need the oil. God bless America."16:23
pedjaI've watched a tv series recently, about Norway being invaded by Russia, on behalf on EU, for stopping the oil production16:23
Anselmo:316:23
joacimi imagine if russia were to invade, it would be to have an all year harbour16:24
pedjaeven though Norway was prepared to share the technology for clean energy for free with the rest of the world, EU/Russia were like 'Nah, gimme oil' :)16:25
joacimi think statoil invests in a lot of things that has nothing to do with oil16:27
joacimto prepare for a day where oil isnt totally viable16:27
joacimthey're equinor now. always happens when old businesses changes names. i forget their new names, and only remember their old ones16:29
pedjadidn't they stir a lot of fuss a while back when they diverted a lot of investments from oil?16:35
pedjabasically showing that the era of oil is near its end16:37
joacimnot much choice16:37
joacimsince they got pretty messed up when the ruble got way weak16:37
joacimmessed up the price of oil, and a lot of people lost their jobs16:38
pedjaany nuclear plants in Norway? I am too lazy to look it up :)16:38
joacimsome for research i think16:39
joacimnot in production16:39
joacimi think it would be sweet to have a few tho16:39
joacimapparently there is thorium in norway16:39
pedjathat's the mineral they used as a fictional power source in that series I was talking about :)16:40
joacimin this city, most energy is either imported, comes from hydro plants, or from burning trash16:40
joacimno idea if it is bullshit or not, but ive seen some people try to push thorium as a better alternative to uranium16:41
joacimin terms of safety and ease of operation16:41
joacimi'll let actual scientists make that decision for me16:41
pedjahere is the pretty good article on it https://whatisnuclear.com/thorium.html16:42
pedjalooks like a viable alternative, with a lot more R&D investment16:44
john_cephalopodaNuclear power is inconvenient.16:48
joacimbut cool16:48
john_cephalopodaAt least fission.16:48
*** smolboye has quit IRC16:48
john_cephalopodaNuclear fusion looks like it will be cool.16:48
Anselmobut at best its rather a long ways off16:48
joacimi think it's more viable to get most of our energy from something renewable16:49
Anselmoand I dont think I've met a plasma physisict who's realy confident in thir work and their field16:49
joacimand reduce our actual energy consumption16:49
Anselmoand I know a lot of plasma physisicts . . .x-x16:49
Anselmospace based solar power :P16:49
joacimnot marketing bullshit like intels new and improved energy effective chips, that idle at the same wattage as before, and have a higher load16:49
joacimspace based, like in simcity 2000?16:50
Anselmothat too16:50
joacimi remember the beam could miss sometimes, and start fires around your solar plant =)16:50
Anselmoahahahaa16:50
Anselmothe people who are into those things usually tell me that that sort of thing is very low risk16:50
joacimalso birds die16:51
joacimbut i think thats already a problem with current solar arrays with focusing towers16:51
AnselmoI should look into that, as I've been told thats not true16:51
Anselmoadmitedly by people who want me to think its the coolest thing ever16:51
joacimidk how space things works16:51
Anselmowith a very wide microwave beam that reaches a station on earth16:52
Anselmoor something broadly similar to that16:52
AnselmoI'd imagine one could pick some wavelength that's less risky to birds and such, but still functional16:53
Anselmobut it wouldnt be like, a beam of intensely focused sunlight, nor like a microwave oven, at the very least16:54
pedjaJapan plans to build one16:54
pedjaquite a few challenges, thou16:54
Anselmo^^16:54
pedjaspace debris being one of the major ones16:55
joacimthere is an anime about space debris16:55
joacimPlanetes I think it was16:56
pedjaanyone has one of those car key fob thingies? what's the size of the battery in it?16:56
Anselmospace derbis and also . . . unsure how big they're talking it would probably be either useless or a orbital construction on a scale no one has any experience in16:57
joacimi  ride a renewable energy vehicle (bicycle). no idea :316:57
john_cephalopodaTarget microwave beams at every restaurant.16:57
Anselmowhich opens a whole new mass of issues and delays16:57
*** smolboye has joined #crux16:58
pedjawell, they are a bit weary of nuclear plants by now16:58
john_cephalopodaHonestly, you can just build solar arrays onto each roof and have fun.16:59
pedjaToshiba lost a shitload of money on those, iirc16:59
Anselmojohn_cephalopoda: and that would save cooling costs a lot, as well I understand16:59
Anselmoin some areas16:59
john_cephalopodaI don't get why people don't switch to renewable energy.17:00
john_cephalopodaJust use water power, wind power and solar power everywhere.17:00
Anselmohydroelectric is fairly destructive to river ecosystems17:00
john_cephalopodaI was more thinking of artificial storage lakes that are filled with surplus power and emptied through turbines if necessary.17:01
pedjasome countries I would never expect here, tbh https://yearbook.enerdata.net/renewables/renewable-in-electricity-production-share.html17:05

john_cephalopodaThere is only one problem with solar: Burning houses.17:30
john_cephalopodaWhen your house starts to burn and you got photovoltaic panels on your roof, the fire department might just wait for your house to burn down because it's complex to extinguish a fire when there's a high voltage that can't be turned off.17:31

MNKyDethI am starting to wonder is it because i used xfs as root? How does everyone obtaon there partuuid and such? I am using the one that is specified in cfdisk. Is that the wrong way, wrong partition uuid?22:17
MNKyDethAm i not supposed to specify linux (hd1,gpt3)/vmlinuz ? Should i do that a different way? I have tried root=/dev/nvme0n1p3 instead of the uuid but that didnt work either.22:19

MNKyDethLots of reading..... I tried copying unifont.pf2 to /boot/grub and /boot/efi/EFI/grub/ I then copied the unifont.pf2 to unicode.pf2 and i now reach a terminal. However, my grub selection menu is all garbled. :) So... At least i have a command line without booting from a usb stick and chrooting now.22:58
joacimif xfs is the cause, you would have gotten a different error22:59
MNKyDethAlso, the issue i was having before i got the no screens error. I needed to mount -t efivarfs efivarfs /mnt/sys/firmware/efi/efivars22:59
